The Riverside County Law Offices of the Public Defender seeks to fill a Paralegal I vacancy at their Riverside office. This position performs a broad range of paralegal duties for one or more attorneys engaged in criminal law. Duties will include filing documents in all levels of California Courts, preparing/formatting motions, affidavits, and discovery documents, receiving incoming court documents, and disseminating them accordingly. Competitive candidates will possess experience working in a law office or public defender office.

The Paralegal I is the first working level in the classification in the Paralegal series and typically reports to an attorney or supervising attorney and may receive lead oversight by a Senior Paralegal in collaboration with an attorney. Incumbents are expected to perform basic and routine duties where the majority of the duties can be learned in a brief period of time, are clearly defined, and have established guidelines which required minimal interpretation. Incumbents are responsible for performing work that is of substantive legal impact under the direction and technical review of an attorney. Advancement to the next level of Paralegal II is obtained by competitive selection through an open recruitment.

The Paralegal I is distinguished from the next higher-level class of Paralegal II in that the latter performs the full range of assigned paralegal duties requiring more complex legal knowledge with less instruction or guidance. The Paralegal series is further distinguished from various other legal classifications where the duties are less technical and focus on procedural or administrative tasks such as scheduling, calendaring, typing, proofing, or recordkeeping.
